In October of 2019, I decided to travel to Berlin on a last minute decision and rent an apartment in the area of Neukoln. I missed the city of Berlin and it’s culture and vibe. I originally planned to go only a week because I had to get back to Montreal for work, but ended up extending a few days because there is something amazing about the city of Berlin that made me feel right at home. Something about the underground punk culture, that I was discovering by hanging out with people I met out there at night.
I generally don’t like travelling in groups. I find myself at my happiest when I'm by myself, exploring a city with a camera in my hands, observing people, scenes, odd things, people at work in little cafés or shops. This time thought it was a little bit different because a 35mm camera limits you to the amount of film you are carrying on yourself and have to make every picture you take count, considering 35mm film is an expensive hobby over time (25$ for a film, 25$ more to develop it). Knowing that, it changes your perspective on what is interesting or what is not.
On my first day out I was walking around the area of the Reichstag and the Brandenburg gate and something very interesting was happening there. There was a huge protest going on by the Rebels for Life, a global environmental movement with the stated aim to use nonviolent civil disobedience to compel government action to avoid tipping points in the climate system, biodiversity loss and the risk of social and ecological collapse. The next few shots were taken that day.
